China finally decides to nationalise tech.
One of the wonders of modern China is that a communist state has allowed big tech to grow like topsy. This has led to the creation of many billionaires, whose very presence would seem to be at odds with China’s socialist ideals. Well, no longer. Big tech is being cut down to size in a variety of ways. But that is the easy part. The harder task is to re-orient big tech to generate Chinese geopolitical advantage. Enter China’s legendary bureaucracy, which has successfully ossified China in the past. It’s an interesting question. Can China effectively both nationalise big tech and also sustain its creativity? It’s as important a question for the future of the world as that of climate change.
