Climate change worries crowd out the potentially much greater impact of the singularity.
The degree of global engagement on climate change is both understandable and encouraging. Few deny that the transition to a much hotter planet will lead to highly undesirable outcomes. Ideally, we must halt this trend but at a minimum we need to understand how to mitigate the consequences. Worst case, though, mitigation is possible. Millions will die in the process and parts of the world will become uninhabitable but humanity will survive. The development of artificial superintelligence, the singularity, is another matter. That could either be beneficial or it could wipe us out. This book explores the issue. It’s a pity that humanity is so focussed on climate change that it is ignoring the bigger issue of artificial superintelligence altogether.
