The ego trick is a very satisfying book, as far as it goes: it covers a considerable amount of ground and a host of concepts but remains accessible at all points. Baggini’s idea is a neat one, that the ‘self’ is just a bundle (of sensations, thoughts, memories and so on) but that the brain successfully persuades us that it is a thing in its own right. Why it should bother playing this trick is, however, not really explored.
