It’s not all going the way of the cloud.

The move towards the cloud has centralised more and more computing. But the sheer amount of data being shipped off to the cloud means that cloud-based AI may become increasingly unwieldy. There’s so much that it takes uncomfortably long to process. There is also an unwelcome latency effect. Some firms are researching whether there is some AI that can be located locally instead, e.g., on gadgets. This all suggests that a mixed architecture might be the best way forward. Thus, where data is sent and processed (cloud or ‘edge’) would vary depending upon the circumstances.
