The dual-process mind moves to a more granular tri-process model.
Dual-process theory became popularised through Kahneman’s Thinking fast and slow. Stanovich himself starts off with dual-process theory. But he takes the theory further forward by splitting Type 2 processing into two. These are what he terms the reflective mind and the algorithmic mind. In so doing, he sheds light on the difference between rationality and intelligence. The former is a broader concept altogether. The latter is narrow and functional. It’s the difference between the organ grinder and the monkey.
