Automation to affect women and men at different times.
PwC’s economists have divided automation, as enhanced by artificial intelligence, into three waves. The first is labelled the algorithm wave. This is fairly benign and is centred on data analysis. The second is labelled the augmentation wave. This is relatively far-reaching, as it spreads from data analysis into substitution of routine or repeatable tasks. This wave also sees appreciable advances in intelligent robotics. The third wave is labelled the autonomy wave. This wave reflects substantial build-out in intelligent robotics. The first two waves are seen as affecting female workers slightly more than male due to the greater proportion of women in clerical positions. Conversely, the third wave affects more men due to their greater representation in manual jobs.
