This worthwhile article considers what is fast becoming the major topic of the era. As a combination of AI and robotics looks likely to emulate humans, albeit in silico, what does that say about how we should design AI? And what does it say about what it is to be human? He quotes Daniel Dennett as arguing that we should think of robots as our slaves. He quotes David Hanson as suggesting that we should design AI to be like us, that is, with emotions, values and morals. In that way, AI would understand and perhaps empathise with us. The philosophical debate has unquestionably started. The question is whether it can possibly keep up with the pace at which the technology is improving.
