Embedding mirror neurons firmly in our social interactions.
Iacoboni has provided a thoroughgoing exposition of the in and outs of mirror neurons. He addresses pretty much all the areas in which it has been suggested that mirror neurons play a part. This includes action understanding, imitation, empathy, language and autism. One interesting theme is the melding of action understanding and imitation in so-called goal-oriented imitation. Behind all of it, however, a unifying theme comes to the fore. Mirror neurons form the glue that brings and holds human society together. There are trenchant critics of this approach such as Greg Hickok. You’ll have to make up your own mind.
