Cortical tissue in a Petri dish makes waves.
Scientists have cultured stem cells to form clumps of cortical tissue. More surprising, however, was the fact that the tissue then exhibited so-called electroencephalogram activity, brain waves, in fact. This activity was similar to that exhibited by the brains of premature babies. This has consequently provoked some speculation around the possibility of generating consciousness in such cortical clumps.
