Human emotions are just an extension of animal emotions.

Another cracking read from one of the world’s leading ethologists. De Waal writes extensively on animal emotions, with special emphasis on his beloved chimpanzees. But there are plenty of stories about bonobos, rats, dogs and others. They all concern the emotions. It draws him into more controversial areas such as self-control and self-interest. Such areas constitute the sweet-spot for more philosophical discussions about free will and subjective experience. Although he does not purport to answer such questions, his book reinforces the point that we can learn much from observing animals too, not just humans.
