A series of essays on instantiating consciousness in a machine.
An interesting publication for two reasons. First, it is fascinating to see how much progress has been made in AI since 2003, just 14 years ago. Secondly, there are two excellent essays that should be read in their own right; they are each reviewed separately. One is by Owen Holland and Rod Goodman. It considers machine consciousness from an engineering perspective. The other is by Luc Steels and lays out an elegant theory of the evolution of language. Some of the other essays are uneven but there is an interesting and novel take on the subject by Susan Blackmore.
