Machine learners and symbolisers are still at odds.
This is the problem that currently bedevils fully autonomous cars. It bedevils the rest of AI as well, insofar as trying to reach artificial general intelligence is concerned. Once a bicycle goes behind a lorry, say, a self-driving car is no longer aware of it. A human knows it is likely to come out the other side. That is just one example. Symbolists believe that symbolic reasoning will have to, at a minimum, bolster machine learning. Machine learners put all their faith into machine learning. Only when this problem is resolved will we achieve AGI, and fully autonomous self-driving cars.
