Another assault on flexible thinking.

There are only two hurdles left to jump before creating the ‘sentient robot’. One is that marvelous facility that humans have for flexible thinking. AI, and especially machine learning, is still wedded to statistical approaches to thinking. Great in many instances, it still falls short at various crunch points such as using common sense. Humans can think in different ways, even if their statistical reasoning is not nearly as fast as that of an advanced machine learner. The great minds in AI are working hard on the shortfall. This time it’s Geoff Hinton’s turn. He calls his idea, GLOM. Read the article or even the paper to find out more. By the way, if you are wondering what the other hurdle is, it’s consciousness.
