Are there ways to protect yourself from being displaced by a robot?

Roose accurately describes the ways in which AI and automation might take all our jobs. Importantly, he points out that the first three industrial revolutions were actually very painful for those whose lives were up-ended in the march forwards. He notes that, whatever the tech companies say, this time will be no different except in one way. It is hard to think of any job that AI and automation will not be able to do. So, the transition will be every bit as painful as in prior industrial revolutions. In this coming industrial revolution, though, so-called new jobs will be no different from old jobs: AI and automation will be able to do them as well. There will be no new jobs in practice. Is it possible to futureproof yourself against this bleak outcome? Frankly, that is hard to see.
