Where does AI end and life begin, or is it where does life end and AI begin?
Winterson plays interesting games with the whole notion of life and artificial life. To that end, her story is structured as two parallel narratives. One is the story of the writing of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The other is the story of a latter day Frankenstein uploading his brain to a digital substrate. Just to ram home the point that all is fluid in this new era, the tale features cryogenics and transgenderism. The book is interesting as an exercise in demonstrating that all the old certainties are fast flying out the window. Are there any answers to this? Not in Winterson’s book.
