Tech antitrust action is a slow-burning fuse.
America’s Department of Justice is taking Google to court over an alleged abuse of its market position in online search. So, the approach is attack after the alleged wrongdoing. The EU is exploring a preventative approach. So, they set onerous rules so that wrongdoing cannot happen in the first place. Governmental and popular interest in antitrust measures are growing in the West. This is not the case in China where the state is more inclined to bend China’s tech companies to its own aims. It is too early to tell how the growing antitrust movement in the West will develop. But what is not yet discussed is the long term impact on investment in AI in the West relative to that in China. Geopolitics may yet play a part in the debate.
