A timely and comprehensive review of autonomous vehicles.
The Economist report first brings the reader up to date on progress made so far by autonomous vehicle manufacturers. The short version is, they are getting better and better. But they are not yet perfect. Snow is a problem, as are, curiously, potholes. The key design hurdle remains achieving full autonomy. Without that, many of the potential benefits of driverless vehicles disappear. Such benefits include massive savings in time and freedom or mobility for non-drivers. One of the most interesting discussions is the potential re-design of cities if driverless vehicles completely replace today’s human-driven vehicles. Autonomous vehicles will re-shape the world. Do not underestimate the extent of their impact on society.
