Facebook has reportedly developed an animated face that can successfully express emotions. The face will do this in conversation with a human. Its algorithm has been trained to interpret the underlying emotions of a human by the expression on the human’s face. It then plays back the appropriate expression on its own face so as to achieve empathy. If the human smiles, so will the animated face, for example. Volunteers have judged its ability to be ‘in sync’ in this way as being as good as a human’s.
