Masterly account of the cortex.

Rolls has produced the definitive account of the workings of the cerebral cortex. As a computational neuroscientist, he is able to explain its workings from the perspective of the neuron as a computational unit. Thus, he explains not only how individual neurons function but also how they work together, hierarchically, to generate behaviours. The depth and breadth of the book is extraordinary. He also provides a detailed account of the differences between the brain as a computational organ and a digital computer. Not to be missed.
