Dr Doolittle lives again.

This is a truly wide-ranging canter through the ways in which many types of animal communicate between themselves. It really serves to put human language in its place. That is not to say that human language does not continue to be the most sophisticated communications system in the animal kingdom. But it no longer towers above all others. Indeed, one should be careful to compare apples to apples. There are some communications tasks that certain animals can perform and that human language simply cannot touch. In some senses, the book demystifies human language although how it operates in the brain at neuronal level remains a mystery.
