A shocking but entirely plausible vision of the future.
Historically, new technology has replaced human labour but new types of jobs have always sprung up to employ displaced workers. Susskind makes the very reasonable point that increasingly AI will do those new types of jobs better than humans as well. So, whenever anyone comes up with a bright idea, it will be AI that carries it out most effectively. This has never happened before. In the future, the great majority of humans will be out of a job. There will be no job that AI cannot do better than a human. People’s lives and the role of government will be transformed. The transition will be difficult but the eventual outcome is manageable, provided we start thinking about it now.
